An extremely rare circa 1862 tintype photograph depicting Charlotte Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia. The image depicts school children, teachers and onlookers standing on Charlotte Street (the main thoroughfare in Sydney). The individuals are in front of the Cossett House and the town's private school, which is not shown. This is one of the earliest photographs of Sydney extant. A very similar image can be found in the Beaton Institute, Cape Breton University, and used in Rannie Gillis's 2003 book "Images of our Past Historic Sydney." The photographer is unidentified, but the only recorded Sydney photographer from this period is a Henry Woodill. The tintype measures 5.5" x 4.25" and the frame appears to be of the period. Note that this tintype is slightly faded due to it actually being a photograph of a photograph. Because tintype 'film' is the same as the final print, tintype images appear reversed when they are developed -- to correct this problem, the reversed image then needs to be photographed again so that it appears properly oriented. Some cameras were also fitted with a 45-degree prism or mirrors to correct this problem.
