An evocative little Dutch painting on panel dated 1942. What makes this piece particularly interesting is the sentiment behind it. It depicts an unlit candle, an unplayed violin, and a book resting in an open position. The previous owner explained the meaning behind this work, painted while Holland was under full German occupation. It represents the darkness caused by the supression of art and culture under the Nazi regime. The painting is signed "C.V. Riet" along with the date 1942.
