Scarce early 1900s Vice-Captain and Captain badges for the Union Protection Company. The UPC began as the Union Engine Company in 1768, later forming the Union Protection Company in 1861. The company pioneered early Canadian firefighting.
For a company that existed for so long there seems to be remarkably little material available for collectors to pursue, and to find badges belonging to a captain is quite an exciting discovery. We believe these particular badges would be early 1900s era and likely worn by members through the WWI and Halifax Explosion era and up through WWII. Found in a Dartmouth estate. These badges would've belonged to the same individual and will remain together as a set.
