Shaman by Maudie Okkituq
Ref: 8576
A large 12" tall x 11" wide x 5" thick stone carving of a shaman, by Maudie Okkituq (Ohiktook) of Ikpik (Thom Bay) and Talurjuaq (Taloyoak). Now nearly 90 years of age, Okkituq seldom carves, and any work she has done in recent years is very small in scale. Please note that the shaman carving does have a piece missing from the backside of his right foot (see photos).
Okkituk was one of the earliest carvers in her community in the mid-1960's and her works often play on shamanistic themes. Her sculptures have been exhibited in shows around the globe and her works are held in major institutional collections including the Toronto's Art Gallery of Ontario, the Canadian Museum of History, and the National Gallery of Canada. Her work has been twice featured on the cover of Inuit Art Quarterly.
