Painted Chalkware Chief

Ref: 10959

SOLD

Early painted chalkware indigenous chief with wonderful wear and including an inscription on the underside that reads "PAINTED BY WALTER HOWE MAY 10 1917 CHIPPAWA ONT CANADA." Interestingly, there is a Walter Howe listed in the Chippawa area who served on the Welland Canal Force during WWI, protecting that strategic supply route from enemy sabotage.

Chalkware figures of this sort were given as carnival prizes and also used as countertop advertisements for tobacco stores.

Dimensions: 17.5"
