Over the past 20 years I've encountered a handful of similar jugs with broken off handles featuring these make-do rope and wood belt toggles. Most often they seem to be from families with fishing and trapping history. The toggle could be pulled up and secured over your waist belt or simply used as an easy handle. This begs the question "Were the handles intentionally broken off these jugs so they could be used in this manner?" No definitive answer on that one.

This is the smallest, nicest and earliest redware example I've found, with an ovoid shape and a thin lip. Measures only 6" x 4.5". Some chips and wear as might be expected from something that would've been well-travelled. An interesting piece found in Colchester County.

Dimensions: 4.5"x6"
