SOLD

A superb 19th century scrimshaw-decorated powder horn from an outstanding Newfoundland collection. This Newfoundland horn is profusely-decorated with various imagery associated with the owner's seafaring life. Clues in the carvings suggest he was in the Navy (two crossed White Ensigns, as well as a fouled anchor), and he was of Scottish origin (the thistle). Exotic birds, palm trees, and a native with a speared fish indicate he visited foreign ports. The precise and delicate shading to the carvings are reminiscent of tattoo work of the era. Although this piece is unsigned and its owner will forever remain a mystery, it's a fine example.
