Halifax Reverend’s Cane
Ref: 10902
A gold-filled handle carrying an engraved dedication reading "J.P.D. LLWYD/JUNE - 7. - 1909".This cane was presented to John Plummer Derwent Lloyd, also referred to as Rev. J.P.D. Llwyd, the alternate spelling alluding to his Welsh heritage.
Lloyd served as a rector to St. Mark's Church in Seattle from 1897 to 1909. It is likely he was gifted this cane upon resigning from there. From 1909 to 1912, he served as vice-provost of Trinity University in Toronto. In 1913, he came to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he worked as rector and dean of All Saints Cathedral. He remained the Episcopal Dean of Nova Scotia for the remainder of his life.
An interesting account of Lloyd surviving the Halifax Explosion can be found on Wikipedia. It states that Lloyd was reading the Morning Prayer in the Chapel of All Saints Cathedral in Halifax at the time of the explosion. The blast shattered the church windows and blew the giant oak doors off their hinges. Lloyd assisted with the wounded that day and also went to Camp Hill to comfort victims. It makes one wonder if perhaps Lloyd may have been carrying this cane on that fateful day.
