Ref: 11158

SOLD

A thin solid gold band by either John or James Langford of Halifax, circa 1810-1845. Clearly stamped with the hallmark JL, accompanied by a reverse-facing rampant lion and capital "H" for Halifax. If this piece is by John Langford it would be circa 1810-1815, and if it was by his son James, it would be closer to 1840-1845. It is believed James Langford was adopted. Upon John's death, his wife Grace married Nova Scotia's most famous silversmith, Peter Nordbeck, who then became James's stepfather in 1833. Regardless, this is the oldest piece of jewellery by a documented Halifax maker that we've had the good fortune of handling. Size 7.25.
