Colossal heavily-carved German Baroque oak marriage chest measuring over 5 feet in length, two feet in height, and two feet in depth. Original, dark patina to the thick solid oak planking throughout. This piece likely weighs in excess of 250 pounds. There is deep-carved Gothic script to the front reading "AN GOTTES SEGEN IST ALLES GELEGEN", an old Biblical saying which loosely translates to "Everything we get comes only with God's blessing." Beneath the quote are the family initials and name "J.G. HUSINGS" as well as the year "ANNO 1735." The front panels are profusely carved with stylized tulips and leaves, while the shaped skirt features similar carving within a raised frieze across its entire length. There is a heavy iron lock with working key. The only visible repairs are where some pieces of oak were angle-inset into the bottom of the feet on each side, likely due to losses from woodworm or rot. 

This chest is likely of North German origin and the Husings name was found in that area in the early 18th century. Marriage chests of this period are not rare, but they are no longer commonly found with an untouched surface.Found in Halifax.

A great piece to display at the foot of a bed or to use as a sizeable coffee table.
