Classical Corner Dropfront Desk
Ref: 10729
An Arts & Crafts period Gustavian-influenced Classical corner dropfront desk of unique design and with an interesting provenance. This corner secretary was purportedly from the estate of Frederick Walker "Casey" Baldwin, the well-known engineer and life-long associate of Alexander Graham Bell. Baldwin lived the majority of his life at Beinn Bhreagh, Bell's famous estate in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. This fall-front desk with pull-out lopers is circa 1920, and has had its old green paint mostly taken down to the natural pine surface.
Casey Baldwin was the first Canadian to fly a plane, and also the first to fly an airplane in America utlizing an aileron. The hydrofoil he designed with Bell set a world speed record on Bras d'Or Lake in 1919. Baldwin served as manager of Bell Laboratories from 1909 to 1932, and he also represented Victoria in the N.S. Legislature from 1933 to 1937. He died in Baddeck in 1948.
