A fine solid pine sea chest named to Captain George W. Corning of Yarmouth and Port Maitland areas. This chest is of sturdy dove-tailed construction and features wooden strapping along with a hand-tacked sail canvas protective covering. 

Captain Corning served as master of the brigantine Ada, which foundered at sea while traveling from Ireland to Sandy Hook. He also commanded the barquentine Verity. Historical records note a 23-day passage moving timber from St. John to Liverpool in 1884. Interestingly, this sea chest features a Liverpool shipping label on one end, suggesting it may have been on that particular voyage.
