This is a Blickensderfer No. 5 typewriter with original oak carrying case. The Blickensderfer Model No. 1 and No. 5 were revealed to the public at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The No. 5 became the first commercially successful portable typewriter and was manufactured until 1919. This is a quite early example, with a serial number of 9686, putting this machine's manufacture at 1895. This typewriter is in fairly good cosmetic condition and appears to be complete, although I do not believe it is currently functional. It is sold as is, as found.
