SOLD

A monumental 5' x 8' wall mural by Nova Scotia artist Joseph Purcell (1927-2017), depicting a scene from the famed 1805 battle between the British Royal Navy and French and Spanish ships. The British victory, led by Admiral Horatio Nelson, decisively ended Napoleon's plans to invade Britain.

This 48" x 74" painting on canvas is stretched and mounted on a custom stretcher crafted in solid mahogany, and mounted within a custom liner and frame, with an overall size of 5' by 8'.

Joseph Purcell did a number of important murals for various institutions over the course of his career, including The Nova Scotia Hotel, the officer's mess at Juno Tower, St. Patrick's Church, the Lord Nelson Hotel, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, among others -- but very few, if any, murals would be in the hands of private collectors. I could find no available market data for Purcell paintings of this size being offered for sale. (WORTH NOTING: This painting was a custom commission done in 1980 on behalf of a serious naval history buff, at a cost of $20,000. The purchasing power of $20,000 in 1980 would be equal to $70,000 in today's money.)

Dimensions: 59"x85"
