August Otto Terracotta Lamp
Ref: 8748
Exceptionally scarce and large circa 1920 modelled and painted terracotta lamp by August Otto. I have only seen one other example and that was in a publication. These lamps were designed with a socket hidden beneath the roof, and the flat base was designed for placing a planter or fish bowl, giving the appearance of a reflecting pool for the light to shine down on as the boy and his horse peer below. This piece stands over 20" in height. The socket and wiring for this lamp have been replaced. Interestingly, there is a hand-written inscription on the underside for "Adin Morgan Noyes, Yarmouth NS." Condition is excellent.
In the early 1900's Otto was a terracotta modeller based in Czechoslovakia. His subject matter is most often figural in form.
