Ref: 9727

SOLD

A Tiffany & Co. sterling silver box with a most interesting history relating to two powerful women of the early 20th century. The box was acquired by the previous owners in New York City many years ago. This heart-shaped Tiffany piece was presented as a wedding gift to Ailsa Mellon, a prominent American socialite and philanthropist who later became co-founder of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and by the 1950's had become one of the wealthiest women in America. She was also a well-known collector of fine pieces of silver, many of which remain on display at the Carnegie Museum of Art.

The box was given to Ailsa on her wedding day and features the engraving on the lid "AM, May 29, 1926" -- and what makes this box doubly interesting is that it was gifted to her by another famous female of the American aristocracy -- Antoinette Eno Wood. Wood was president of the Simsbury Equal Suffrage League and a key figure in promoting women's rights in the early 1900's until her death in 1930. The bottom of the Tiffany box is inscribed "Wedding Gift from Antoinette Eno Wood."

Condition is excellent.
