“Summer” by Collins Eisenhauer
Watercolour by one of Canada's most important folk artists, Collins Eisenhauer. Titled "Summer Thunder Clouds," this painting depicts ten houses seated atop a hill, the houses with smoke rising from their chimneys. At the center of the dwellings is a church. The sky overhead is blue with ominous storm clouds aloft while in the foreground there are two wonderful stylized birch trees flanking a small pond with a pond boat afloat. There is a small winding road leading up the hill towards the small village.
Please note that this painting is not signed but has solid provenance. It was acquired by the previous owner directly from Eisenhauer's daughter, Ferne Gertrude Eisnor, who wrote an inscription on the back and also includes a letter by her, reminiscing about her father. The letter is included with the painting. NOTE: Collins was known as "Eisener" within his community and the family spelled the last name several different ways over the years. Ferne's gravestone uses the last name Eisnor. Interestingly, the provincial museum's collection includes a painting Collins created for his daughter when she was born in 1932.
