A colourful folk art memorial to the S.S. CaribouSteamship Caribou was a passenger steamer ferry running between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port-aux Basques, Newfoundland. During WWII she was attacked by a Nazi U-boat, causing her sinking and a loss of over half her 237 passengers and crew. This reverse painting on glass is framed in douglas fir and likely done sometime shortly after the sinking. It is captioned at the top "TORPEDOED OCT. 14-42/FROM NORTH SYDNEY TO N.F.L.D." Condition is excellent. A great piece of Nova Scotia folk art honouring those who were lost during a tragic wartime event.
