A scarce circa 1840/50 Staffordshire pearlware plate advertising "B. O'Neill & Co., Importers & Dealers in China, Glass & Earthenware, Halifax N.S.". The plate measures nearly 8" in diameter and has an unmarked back. It exhibits minor wear but has no chips or cracks. Bernard O'Neill operated on Bedford Row in Halifax from around 1840. In 20 years on the hunt I have only seen two other examples of this plate, one of which turned up in a local auction and was in very poor condition -- the other, in a condition comparable to this one, I found in a New Brunswick estate 8-10 years ago. I have also seen smaller versions of this plate with slightly different transfer printing, and those seem to be a little more common although I have not seen one in quite some time.
