A scarce late 19th/early 20th century pipe ashtray of Rhodesian teak and with a vegetable ivory pipe knocker. This item was designed as a promotional piece for J.W. Soper of Victoria Falls, South Africa. Soper was a dealer in teak and vegetable ivory. What makes this piece particularly interesting is that the center knocker features a stanhope, a tiny glass viewing window only a few millimeters across, through which a microphotograph can be viewed when held up to light -- this example shows an image of Victoria Falls.
