Fine quality, small 19th century brass postal scale with porcelain insets featuring transfer-printed images of cherubs. Complete with full set of graduated weights. This scale was owned by a well-known Scotsman by the name of Alexander Somervail. Somervail was born in 1841 and Water on Leith. He was a member of the Philosophic Institute, the Naturalists Field Club, and the Geological Society of Edinburgh. Quite a bit of information on him can be found online. The scale is personally engraved with his name and home address "A. Somervail, 73 Geo. St., Edinburgh." For a period of time Alex Somervail was a stationer at that location.
