Miniature Chippendale Lowboy
A wonderful scale miniature of an English Chippendale walnut lowboy dresser. This piece of furniture measures only 9.5" x 8.5" x 5.5" and exhibits a tremendous amount of attention to detail and undoubtedly the work of a skilled cabinetmaker -- it may have been intended as an apprentice's work. Our estimate is approximately 100 years of age but it could be older.
This piece has everything you would want to see in a full-scale period piece. It is of walnut construction with oak secondary woods. The top features a finely-molded edge and a select piece of crotch veneer surrounded by cross-banding. The drawer fronts are also crotch veneers which have been laid on to give the impression of thumb-molded edging. The cabriole legs have properly blocked knees and terminate in pad feet. Looking underneath, you will see all the blocking and drawer runners you would expect to see in a full-size example. The drawers have three dovetails at both the front and back and also feature chamfered bottom boards. The top of the dresser is correctly secured to the carcass with tiny brass screws.
All in all, this is an impressive display of someone's understanding of the art of cabinetmaking.
