Large British Pub Overdoor Sign
A rare survivor is this massive late 19th/early 20th century overdoor pub sign advertising Royston Fine Ales. This sign is porcelain on steel and manufactured by Garnier of London, measuring ten feet in length and 16" wide. It features its original square-nailed wooden back frame as well as its painted wooden surround, taking its size to 10'4" x 20". Signs of this size was designed exclusively for hanging over a pub's front door.
Royston Fine Ales was brewed in England for 250 years and owned by Phillips' Brewery. This particular sign spent its past 50 or so years hanging inside a Halifax tavern that recently underwent renovations.
We've included a photo showing a nearly identical sign hanging above a British pub with several WWII Royal Air Force crew standing in front.
