Federal Period Classical Sofa
A fine Boston Classical mahogany sofa of the American Federal Period attributed to William Hancock circa 1820. The sofa exhibits design elements unquestionably lifted from Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Encyclopedia of 1805.
This piece features a cylindrical crestrail terminating in foliate-carved finials, each cylindrical armrest concealing a pull-out storage compartment. The sofa sits on square tapered feet with carved Classical detailing and large brass casters. Very good condition overall.
See The Winterthur Museum, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for nearly identical examples. A quality sofa of its period.
