SOLD

Note that although this horn is missing its end cap, it is a very good, honest example of an early Newfoundland decorated powder horn. Dated 1855, I have only ever had one other Newfoundland horn with this early of a date. It is signed by its owner Christopher Chidley. Chidley was born in Renews, Newfoundland circa 1812, was a registered voter there from 1855 to 1859, and was listed as a resident of Caple Broyle, Newfoundland by 1871. He died in Cape Broyle in 1889.

The horn has a boldly-carved 2-masted schooner flying a pennant signed "WYOMING" and there is also a large carved pinwheel. It has a lovely, warm, aged colouration. Finding good original, untouched Newfoundland horns is not an easy task these days. It would be quite easy to do an end cap transplant from a lesser 19th century horn, although I prefer leaving it exactly as found. Also missing its plug, which is quite common. This horn came out of a long-time Newfoundland collection. Measures 12" long x 3" wide at the end cap hole.

Dimensions: 12"x3"
