This is an American chair form that is not particularly rare in itself, but to find one in original finish such as this one is becoming exceedingly more difficult. This chair has several features which allow it to rise above the many of its country-made counterparts, most namely its original finish, but also the delicately-shaped skirt to the front rail, the crisp lines to the pierced splat, and the nicely-scrolled ears. The slip seat looks to be the original although it may have been re-woven at some point in its history. The grungy finish is as good as it gets, showing just the right amount of wear at the high points. Overall very good condition for an 18th century chair.
