We believe this to be a fairly early piece of Hagen pottery, likely from the 1930's. It has been documented that Alice Hagen first explored the clays of the Annapolis Valley region and her earliest works were somewhat plain red earthenware and with slip decoration. Interestingly, this ale mug is of plain glazed red earthenware decorated in white slip, and advertises the town of Port Royal and the year of its founding. The bottom is painted with crude black lettering "A.M.H." and "N.S.". In a more refined writing is "HAGEN POTTERY/MAHONE BAY N.S." as well as the initials "R.H." which is likely for her daughter Rachel Hagen. Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks.
