Yarmouth Light by Lester Sykes
1950's oil on panel by noted Yarmouth County black artist, Lester Sykes. Lester Sykes was born in Greenville, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia in 1930. He is considered an important African-Canadian artist from this province and has been exhibited at the AGNS. Sykes was a military man, a mechanic, and although never formally trained in art, developed a reputation for his folky painting style in bold colours. This is one of his earlier works done in the 1950's. Sadly, an accident later in life caused him to gradually lose his sight, and as a result his later works were much less detailed.
