Rare size and rare merchant. This is a 1 1/2 gallon open crock stamped with merchant Robert MacDonald of Westville, N.S.. The crock has some unusual manufacturing flaws evident. (See photos below.) On one ear is a chip that was nicked off and embedded in the main body, obviously done before the pot was fired. As well, there are two areas along the bottom edge that were infilled sometime before firing. Interestingly, they are at exact opposite ends of the bottom, which suggests they are a result of the crock being lowered into the kiln. These are not post-production flaws that were repaired in recent times -- these were definitely manufacturing defects...flaws such as these may be why MacDonald crocks are such a rare find.
