Halifax Mariner’s Slate
A wonderful 19th century mariner's slate belonging to Haligonian George H. Bayne, who was a mechant with Matheson Haley & Company around 1880. The slate is in book form, with paneled pine front and back, featuring brass hinges opening to reveal two pieces of slate, one with etched columns with heading for Courses, Winds, Remarks on Board, etc. The exterior features Bayne's initials "GHB" heavily carved into the border, as well as his name written on the panel in pencil. One piece of slate is cracked, otherwise good.
