A remarkable 18th century powder horn found in Lunenburg. The horn is named to Asahee Dodge. Dodges emigrated from New England to Nova Scotia in the 18th century and it is believed that is when this horn made its way to Canada. The main body is carved with a variety of vignettes -- most notably two large sailing ships, and beneath the ships a small manned boat with two stick men hand-lining within a large school of fish. As well, there are primitively-scribed hunting scenes and wildlife. The date 1779 is carved into the heavily oxidized butt. The strap appears to be original, of coated sail canvas. It is not often a powder horn of this quality and authenticity comes to market. See additional photos.
